About This Place

Nestled in the heart of South San Francisco, Layalena Restaurant & Bar is a vibrant hub of authentic Middle Eastern cuisine and lively hookah ambiance. This spot masterfully brings the flavors and warmth of Lebanese culinary tradition right to San Mateo Avenue, making it an irresistible destination for food lovers and those seeking a cozy, spirited dining experience.

The menu at Layalena reads like a love letter to classic Levantine fare, with standout dishes that tantalize every sense. Imagine savoring the rich, gooey sweetness of their Kunafa, a perfect balance of creamy cheese and crunchy, buttery pastry soaked in fragrant syrup. For those craving something heartier, the Mix Kabobs Platter offers an enticing medley of succulent grilled meats, including tender Lamb Chops and juicy Chicken Shish Tawook, each bursting with smoky, spiced perfection. The wraps are another highlight — the Chicken Shawarma Wrap layers flavorful, marinated chicken inside soft lavash bread with a luscious garlic sauce and crunchy pickles, creating a harmony of textures and bold Middle Eastern spices that dance on the palate.

Pastry lovers will gravitate toward the Safeeha Pie, a luscious, savory treat filled with well-seasoned ground beef and lamb, sautéed in clarified butter and warmed to perfection. Meanwhile, the aromatic Zaatar Pie invites guests to enjoy a thyme, sesame, and olive oil-infused bite that is both simple and utterly satisfying. And for those who appreciate a refreshing finish, Layalena’s tangy, creamy Yogurt Drink serves as a soothing complement to the robust flavors throughout the meal.

The dining atmosphere at Layalena perfectly matches the authenticity of the food. Designed with a keen eye for Middle Eastern aesthetic charm, the space feels both inviting and vibrant — ideal for intimate dinners, casual lunches, or joyous gatherings. Guests frequently mention the warm hospitality from the attentive staff, particularly names like Nesreen and Saif, who add a personal touch that makes each visit memorable. The clean, welcoming environment extends to their calming outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal or sampling one of their renowned hookah blends.

Customers consistently rave about the impeccable service and the genuine care that the team puts into every aspect of the experience. One patron described the food as “absolutely delicious” and highlighted the personable service as “just perfect,” while another shared how the host introduced them to real Middle Eastern hospitality, even surprising them with complimentary baklava. The presence of Lebanese head chef Abu Mohamed elevates every dish, turning dining at Layalena into a magical journey through authentic flavors.

Whether you're drawn by a craving for expertly prepared Falafel Wraps, the bold zest of their Beef and Lamb Shawarma, or simply the desire to immerse yourself in a warm, culturally rich atmosphere, Layalena Restaurant & Bar succeeds in delivering an unforgettable Lebanese dining experience that feels like home — but better.

I don’t even know where to start. The food, the decor, the music, and the staff were all incredible. Saif was our host and showed us what real Middle Eastern hospitality feels like. And the food? Not just good, it is truly excellent. They even surprised us with free baklava at the end. Such a thoughtful touch. You guys are amazing. Highly, highly recommended.

We recently hosted our engagement party at Layalena, and it was nothing short of amazing! From the moment we booked, the team made us feel like we were in the best hands. The venue was beautifully set up, warm, and welcoming — everything looked elegant and thoughtfully done. Sameer was incredible — he offered genuine, helpful suggestions about the menu as if he were planning his own event, never trying to upsell anything. His recommendation to include shawarma as an appetizer was a total crowd-pleaser — our guests are still talking about it! Mariam, the event coordinator, is an absolute star. She’s organized, calm, and went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly. She even stepped in to coordinate with the florist when she didn’t have to — truly a level of service that’s rare to find. Her attention to detail and professionalism made planning a breeze. The food was delicious and generously served — everyone was well-fed and happy. The entire experience exceeded our expectations, and we’re so grateful to the Layalena team for making our special day unforgettable. Highly recommend Layalena for any event — we would absolutely book with them again!

A hidden gem! Very close to SFO Airport. Falafel was so crispy and delicious. Rarely I enjoy falafel anywhere. Chicken Shawarma was juicy and yummilicious! Mansaf, let’s talk about Mansaf. First of all, it’s an acquired taste. If you will like it, you will love it. Such a different flavor and unique tastebuds. There is rice topped with a piece of lamb. Then, there is a hot yogurt sauce/soup that you put on the rice and eat it. Such a delectable taste! 2nd visit: We came back to this place to try new items. Chicken Shawarma was wrapped in this thin bread with finely cut chicken pieces inside, so delicious! Chicken Tawook was good but not very juicy. Half Chicken grill was as it should be; grilled, juicy, and flavorful. They did not disappoint us with the food at all. Well done, Chefs!
